Day 44 Woodstock to Palos Heights
Another nice day in Illinois, although there is supposedly a chance of rain tonight.
We left Woodstock at 7 AM and part of the route was to go around the town square where the movie Ground Hog Day was filmed. (pic) At the 20 k mark (12 mi) we got onto a bike path which went on for 60k (36 mi). It brought us by back yards, industrial areas, commercial areas, a coffee/bakery shop (pic), over bridges, over roads, under roads, along the Fox River, through a number of suburban areas (there must be a lot of executives in the Chicago area), and by parks.
At the 70 k mark by a park with a working windmill (pic) some ladies from the Wheaton CRC had oatmeal cookies and water for us. The cookies were very good.
After the bike path was done, we got onto some busier roads, so it's not at all like the mid West states anymore. We stopped for a look at a Guitar Center store, lots of good stuff, but no room on the bike. So we left empty handed.
We got to Palos Heights and Trinity Christian College at 3 PM. A little later today as we stopped longer along the way and the bike path was nice but slower than roadways. Cyclists really had to pay attention on the bike path as it changed and crossed etc many times. Happy to say our wrong turns were only minor. I haven't fallen with my new pedals and clips yet either despite the many times needing to stop on the path and all the intersections in this busier part of the tour.
The campus here at Trinity is beautiful. It used to be a golf course and the old building used for student admissions, etc, (pics) used to be the pro shop. It's one of the older buildings of Palos Heights period.
For supper it's Chicago deep dish pizza I'm told, and it's about ready. We plan to billet out tonight after the meet and greet.
Totals for day: 143 klm (89 mi), 6:00 on the saddle, 23.8 kph avg (14 mph)

Hi Randy,
We heard from Shelly and we are anxious for a great reunion in Jersey City. I realize how easy it is to talk about that, and how dependent on God it is to realize that, even up to the last day. With that in mind, we pray for your safety daily.
Blessings,
Fred and Ruth
Hi Randy,
Well, we're back from vacation and one of the first things I did was check your blog. What will your faithful readers do when the trip is done?
Surfin around on some of the other blogs I'm getting the idea that the shine has worn off the cup just a tad.
So many of us are virtually rooting for you. You have a big fat cheering team who are pulling for you each day. So keep up the good work especially when you are sick and tired of it all.
Here's a poem and a quote I thought might cheer you and your compats when you are feelin low.

It Couldn't Be Done
(Edgar Guest)
Somebody said it couldn't be done,
But he with a chuckle replied
That "maybe it couldn't," but he would be one
Who wouldn't say so till he'd tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing and he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.
Somebody scoffed: "Oh, you'll never do that;
At least no one has ever done it";
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat,
And the first thing we knew he'd begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing and he tackled the thing
That couldn't be done, and he did it.
There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you, one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start to sing as you tackle the thing
That "cannot be done," and you'll do it.

Persistence
(Calvin Coolidge)
Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.
Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.
Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts.
Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.
Take care,
SD the sil
Hey Randall, keep it up. You are getting closer to the home stretch. We keep praying for you each dinner (Kendra did it on her own last night) and look forward to hearing about it all in person when you get back.
