Day 47 South Haven to Grand Haven

It was a cool morning, probably as cool as our morning in Winter Park CO when we were at 9,000' elevation. But the sun came up at 8 (remember time change yesterday) and it was another very nice day.

We left at 8 and headed north to Grand Haven. We made a stop in the tourist lake side town of Saugatuck and had a coffee/pastry stop there. We had a lunch stop at Graafschaap CRC. (pic) It is, I believe, the oldest church in the denomination. In the basement of the church is a Holland MI, immigrant, CRC museum, done very nicely. The lunch was good too. We pedalled around Holland's downtown as well, talking to some locals and Fred could go to the Peanut Store to buy some droppies. The downtown has been redone and looks good. (pic)

We took our trip down Lakeshore Dr, hoping to see the lake as we pedalled, but unfortunately trees are in the way of the view. The properties along the road are very deep (behind the trees) so we couldn't see much of the houses either, but did notice that most of the owners have Dutch names.

Just before Grand Haven some people set up a welcome stand (pic) and had fresh blueberries and water for us. There are lots of berry farms around here and the Holland area is fairly rural in general.

We got to the CRC Conference Grounds/Campground at 1:30. It's a really nice spot and has beach access (pic). Tonight we had a great steak dinner put on for us.
Ad deBleaj's wife works here for the summer, so we met her today. She was busy baking extra pies this morning. Very good, all sorts.

Todays ride: 90 klm (54 mi), 3:30 on the saddle, 25.9 kph avg (15.5 mph)

PS Mike D - I don't have your ph no here. But our schedule for Sat is Gather at EGR School Adm Bldg (Lake and Hall) at 12:30 for ride into Calvin. Arrive at Calvin at 1, hang around rest of afternoon at Prince Conference Center (where we camp) but also need to go to town for a bit. Can you leave your # on my hotmail acct randydewolde@hotmail.com or email what your schedule is like. Thanks.
