Day 54 London to Hamilton

Today was fairly warm like usual, but a little more on the humid side. The roads were good just like yesterday and the wind wasn't a big deal either way. We left at 7:15 this morning.

The scenery here in southern Ontario is mainly of farmland. The land is farmed more actively than what we had seen in Michigan. There are dairy and poultry farms, and lots of corn, soy, and tobacco fields. There is also a lot of commerce and industry happening here as well. London has a population of about 300M and Hamilton here is around 500M with lots of little towns in between. We came by a big GM parts distribution centre along the way today. There were a lot more hills today than yesterday.

We had a number of refreshment stops along the route. Our first one was at Ingersoll CRC (pic), then a little later there was a stop at a field where the people from Woodstock CRC treated us. After that we came by the Cambridge CRC stop (they are actually 20 k off of the route, but found a place to set up beside the road) and the next stop was at the Brak's place on Jerseyville Road in Brantford where the Brantford CRC set up shop (pic). At Redeemer College, our camping spot for the night, the Meadowlands Fellowship CRC which is behind the college had refreshments and eats for us as well. I tell you, these Ontario folks know what to do when a couple of hundred hungry and thirsty cyclists pedal through their area. They know a lot of the cyclists as about 1/3 of them are from Ontario. We appreciate their eagerness to meet and greet and keep us refueled. Thanks to all of you!

So now we are at Redeemer University College in Ancaster, just before Hamilton. It's a nice looking campus here. We have use of computers in their library, so it's pretty busy here right now (before supper). Redeemer is hosting us for supper. We got in at 1:45.

Totals for day: 125 k (77 mi), 4:40 cycling time, avg 26.9 kph (16.4 mph)

btw, we went off route a bit today at the end and shaved 4 k off the route, so that goal has now been met. Thanks to Christina N (ON) a Redeemer student for the tip.

A patient was at her doctor's office after undergoing a complete physical exam. The doctor said, "I have some very grave news for you. You only have six months to live."

The patient asked, "Oh doctor, what should I do?"

The doctor replied, "Marry an accountant."

"Will that make me live longer?" asked the patient.

"No," said the doctor, "but it will SEEM longer."

There you go. Albert and I know more than one accountant joke. :)

Hope you're well. See if you can take in a winery tomorrow.

Hi Randy,

I need to introduce myself - I am Fred Everett’s daughter. Our family has been following your blog and have been praying for you and the participants of Sea-to-Sea.

It’s not like we have much of a choice :). We are all following the Shifting Gears book - Dad handed them out to just about everyone we know. Wherever we take my parents they are wearing yellow Sea-to-Sea shirts. Dad has 2 of them just so when one is in the wash he can wear the other. I also work at my Dad’s business - so when he is having a frustrating day I just pull up your blog and his face lights up. I know you’ll be ready for this tour to be over, but I think my father is going to go through Sea-to-Sea withdraw :).

I am going to go with Dad to the airport on Tues. to pick up Shelley & Elly. I am looking forward to meeting them. They are in good hands . . . no worries for you. Here in NJ the Sea-to-Sea buzz is really starting up and we know some people getting involved with the ride from Sussex to Liberty State Park.

We will continue to pray for the tour and your safety. The commitment all of you have made to this tour is just amazing!

Sarah
